Replacement crowns
The definition of a crown is the visible part of the tooth
above the gum line. A replacement crown replaces an unattractive,
decayed or damaged natural crown of a tooth. Durable replacement
crowns can restore or enhance the patient’s teeth and
smile.
The process of having a replacement crown fabricated and
inserted is relatively straight forward. The dentist pares
down the original tooth, takes an impression of it and sends
the impression to a dental lab to be fabricated. The dental
lab makes an identical copy of the crown to be replaced—usually
out of porcelain—and the dentist cements the replacement
crown onto the prepared surface.

Veneers
Veneer restoration replaces only the front visible face of
the natural surface of the tooth to produce an aesthetically
more beautiful and long-lasting solution. As with a full replacement
crown, the dentist pares down the front surface of the tooth,
takes an impression of the prepared tooth and sends the impression
to a dental lab to be fabricated. The dentist then cements
the new veneer—usually made of porcelain—to the
surface of the old tooth to create a more attractive, natural-looking
tooth.

Bonding
Bonding is a technique for replacing an unattractive tooth
surface with a more aesthetically appealing tooth-colored
material. The material is applied in layers to the surface
of the tooth and then shaped appropriately. Painless, the
procedure is ideal for repairing damaged front teeth or replacing
old or discolored fillings. Bonding can even fill the gaps
between teeth by increasing the width of the teeth.

Porcelain inlays
and onlays
A porcelain inlay or onlay is a solid filling made outside
the mouth and then carefully cemented in place on the tooth
surface. Made of long-lasting pure porcelain, an inlay or
onlay is a superior form of restoration commonly used to replace
unsightly or discolored fillings. The dentist removes the
unattractive filling, takes an impression and sends the impression
to a dental lab to be fabricated. The new inlay or onlay is
then fitted to the tooth and cemented in place.

Whitening
Teeth darken and yellow naturally with age. Whitening
is a procedure designed to lighten the color of discolored
teeth or remove unattractive stains.
There are two methods for whitening. In the first,
the dentist applies a peroxide-based gel to the teeth.
An ultraviolet light is then sometimes used to accelerate
the whitening process. The patient then continues
the treatment at home.
The second method involves the use of in-home whitening
toothpastes and kits. These methods, while successful
to some degree, are usually more gradual than professional
in-office approaches. Professional whitening produces
results faster than over-the-counter remedies, many
of which can be ineffective or harmful to sensitive
soft tissues like gums, check linings, tongue and
palate if improperly used. Many users report dissatisfaction
with the clinical effectiveness of some in-home treatments
and whitening toothpastes.
